From single cathode to triple cathode: a leap forward in welding technology

In the production of stainless steel welded pipes, welding quality and speed directly impact production efficiency.

Triple-cathode welding is an upgraded solution compared to traditional single-cathode welding. It utilizes multiple welding guns working in tandem to improve welding efficiency and weld quality.

✅ 1. Wider weld pool and greater weld penetration

Triple-cathode welding uses three welding guns, resulting in a wider heating area, faster weld pool formation, and easier weld penetration and flawless welds.

A single-cathode welding system, on the other hand, has a narrow heating area, resulting in relatively weaker weld penetration and weld quality.

✅ 2. Faster welding speed and higher efficiency

Multiple-cathode welding releases more heat energy per unit time, naturally increasing weld speed by over 50% compared to a single-cathode welding system.

It is particularly suitable for large-scale production and stainless steel pipe welding.

✅ 3. More stable arc and better-looking welds

Triple-cathode welding disperses the current, improving arc concentration and reducing arc deflection and arc scattering.

The welds are uniform and smooth, reducing the need for rework.

If you have high demands on weld quality, triple-cathode welding is definitely worth considering. Many of our customers have seen production capacity increase by over 30% after switching to triple cathodes.

For example, one of our American customers, who manufactures stainless steel heat exchange tubes, used an Italian production line, which was experiencing slow weld speeds. After switching to triple cathodes, the penetration issue was immediately resolved, and the weld speed increased from 6 meters per minute to 10 meters.
